Expressive Arts Carnival Activity No. 2

| By Paul | | Comments (16)

Welcome to Activity No. 2 of the Expressive Arts Carnival.

Use any visual means (e.g., drawing, painting, photography) to represent, in an abstract way, your experience of all or part of your internal world. The key to the activity is to focus on an abstract representation. The reason for this focus is that it helps us to describe our experiences in a way that is not so familiar to us.

Submissions are due by July 19, 2010. All submissions must be made by e-mail. You can send me an image file preferably with a width greater than or equal to 550 pixels (with or without explanatory text). Or send me a link to a post hosted on your own site (or blog), if you have one. It is important to repeat that nobody is required to have a blog in order to participate. Submissions may be of current or prior work, but all are encouraged to say some words about your process. The Carnival will be published on the afternoon of July 21, 2010.

To submit, e-mail to: paul@mindparts.org.

Please use "EXPRESSIVE ARTS" in the subject heading to help me keep track of submissions. Every submission will receive an acknowledgement of receipt.

The Expressive Arts Carnival posts monthly activities and encourages submissions which will be published on Mind Parts. For more information, see: Expressive Arts Carnival Home.

If you have questions, direct them to me by e-mail or ask in the comments here.

oh i like this one paul! i think you have a definite gift for creating these activities. i'm really looking forward to mindplaying with this over the next week or so and then letting loose and seeing what happens...

thanks again for starting this group--these activities are really helping me through a difficult and challenging time right now...

Paul Author Profile Page replied to Jahda:

Thanks Jahda. I'm not sure I have a knack for this, except I've had a good deal of experience with expressive therapies and wanted to share what I know of them with others. I'm glad doing these activities are helpful to you.

I turned on comments, at your suggestion, as my motivation for having them off was only because I was afraid people would make their submissions through comments. Anyway, it makes sense to have them on in case people want to discuss anything about the activity. Thanks!

Just sent mine. I love that you are doing this.

Hmmm...can you help me out? When you write "abstract"...does that mean without shape or form? Can it include using something "tangible" or "concrete"...something perhaps symbolic?

Does it have to be a new piece...or...if we happen to have something we have done previously that fits...can that be used?

Paul Author Profile Page replied to OneSurvivor:

Hi OneSurvivor. Abstract is really only a suggestion... you can do whatever you wish. But with the direction I was hoping to steer people more towards expressing experiences and feelings and less in the realm of being literal. Of course you can use a piece that's been done before!

hi paul! thank you so much for doing this. i sent you my work just now. i had the same sort of questions onesurvivor had. so i'm glad she asked them and i'm glad your response to her was along the lines of what i imagined your answer would be.

OneSurvivor said:

Cool! Now I just have to figure out which one I want to share! :-)

Paul Author Profile Page replied to OneSurvivor:

Thanks Katie. Got it!

Another question. Can you translate pixels into file size? I don't know how many pixels my pictures are, but I can adjust some file sizes. Does that make sense? I may just have to send you something and you can tell me if it is the right size. LOL

Paul Author Profile Page replied to OneSurvivor:

Best is to send me the largest filesize you have and I'll convert it.

It's kind of sad, now that I think about it, but we haven't done any sort of expressive art in over 15 years. We took an art therapy class in 1994 I think. We get to do creative stuff but not reflecting inside. This was good, and while "fun" is subjective, it was definitely worthwhile.

Paul Author Profile Page replied to Inner Family:

Inner Family: Well, then, I am very glad you were able to do this!
