Piano Dream

I do not generally post my dreams or nightmares. I just think they are usually so far out there that they will be of no use to others. This one is no exception. But I am posting it today because it will help provide context for the next post later this week.

In the dream, I was with my wife and and eldest daughter at a rather odd hotel for a gymnastics meet. My daughter was off doing something with her friends. And my wife and I were taking our bags up the elevator to our room. I remember we were on the 6th floor. It was not an ordinary hotel. It was more like a really old cluttered house. We stumbled upon a room where there was a rather effeminate man doing something with a college-age girl of Indian heritage. He sort of reminded me of Detective Tardio from Martin Lawrence's "What's the Worst That Could Happen?" (a really funny but off color movie). He was helping the girl make some garments, and material was strewn across the large table.

I walked in and noticed he had a really old grand piano. It was not an ordinary piano, but a red-ish leopard finish and in great condition. It was old and exceedingly long. He immediately asked if I wanted to play it. I said yes. I said "What is your favorite song?" And he said Memory from Cats or anything from Phantom of the Opera. He fumbled around and found the sheet music. I played. And I completely fell in love with the feel of this piano. After I played his favorites, I then played all bunch of styles of music and put the piano through its paces.

So, I played and played. When I was done, I asked him about the piano. I asked how long he's had it. He said it's been through generations. He said "It has been in my family for nearly 200 years." Then he surprised me with "Do you want to buy it?" I said "How much?" The reply was $75. I thought he had been joking because I knew it was an awesome piano.

I was going to say yes. But immediately I thought that I had to clear it with my wife, which is something I rarely do in real life so I have no idea why I did it in the dream! She was way on the other side of the room admiring some of the furnishings in the room. I also thought about whether we would have the space in my music room.

But, before I could say yes, the Indian girl sort of randomly said she would buy it. The man accepted. I said that wasn't fair because he asked me. Plus I was the one who put the piano through its paces and she showed no interest. I got into an argument with the girl, even grabbing her by the front of her shirt. I started yelling. But she would not back down. The effeminate man sat quietly and did nothing. I tried to reason with him. But he wouldn't listen. I kept saying this wasn't fair.

It was then that I looked back in on the piano. It was a really eclectic piano. When closed, I was hoping the manufacturer of the piano was Steinway. But the name of the piano was SKELERTON (or something like that, I'm not sure really). But the lettering was really large like 8 inches high and shiny silver and covered the whole width of the piano. I had never seen anything like that on a piano. But I didn't care. The piano just played like a dream and that was all that mattered.

I kept fighting with the girl. She seemed to have no interest in the piano, but it felt like she was doing this just to get to me. The man said something about getting him a check. So, she went outside and got her mother. The mother came up the stairs and started arguing with me. I tried to reason with her. But she just kept talking over me. The mother was blonde and very American looking. She was doing talking nonsense, which to me said that she had no argument, but thought if she just kept talking she could not lose. So, that's what she did, she just kept talking.

At which point, I said, "Okay, you win." And I woke up.

It was not long ago in Piano Dream that I wrote about my recent resurgence in dreams and nightmares. I do not quite have an explanation for all this new sleep activity. But it was pretty absent for some time... Read More

Dreams are funny things, aren't they? It's strange the ones that stand out and seem important. I try and try to make sense of it and usually find some kind of meaning, but it is not very satisfying because at the same time I always have the sense that I'm missing something.

The details interest me... why the sixth floor? It makes me think of shakras or of levels of transcendence (especially since you are in the elevator).

I'll be interested in hearing your thoughts on it in a future post.

Hi Shen! No, I won't give away what's to come! :) But I was not aiming for it to be an interpretation of this dream.

Wow Paul! That piano really represented something important and meaningful to you in life. Something that maybe others who have it take for granted like it's no big deal. For you though, you would appreciate it and love having it and really deserve it because of how much you'd value it. That's what I saw anyway. I look forward to seeing what is to come!

Paul Author Profile Page replied to Nansie:

Thanks Nansie. I grew up with a real (analog) piano and played all through college on one. After college, I transitioned to mainly all digital and I have a really good digital setup with a Steinway-sampled software-based piano on my computer. I have been recently thinking about adding a real piano in my music room at home, which already consists of a rack of keyboards and synthesizers, trumpets, flutes, harmonicas, bongos, guitars, and more. So, if I got a real piano, I'd probably have to smash down the walls of the room and build an addition!

Nansie said:

Geeeeee....bet you'd love to have a good reason tho to tear that wall down? I love piano's too! Would give my eye teeth for a nice one.

Paul Author Profile Page replied to Nansie:

Ain't gonna happen though. I actually love my Kurzweil 88-key monster. I love it so much that instead of getting a new one, which is made more cheaply now and a lot lighter, a couple years ago I had the inside completely taken apart and had a new set of hammer keys put in.

Nansie said:

HAHA Now that's devotion to an instrument!!! I was like that with my guitar too! :)

That's one helluva dream Paul. Looking forward to the next post and seeing how it relates.

Paul Author Profile Page replied to Evan:

It will relate in a way that you have to stretch it a bit Evan.

I had a dream the other night about a huge weta running around the gazebo I was sitting in. I hate bugs.

Management.

Paul Author Profile Page replied to castorgirl:

But the gazebo was nice?

castorgirl said:

Yes, that's why the bug was particularly annoying.

Paul Author Profile Page replied to castorgirl:

Did you squash it?

castorgirl said:

No, that would have involved me going near it. The weta lived.

Paul Author Profile Page replied to castorgirl:

Well, thankfully, you survived it. You could have just sent someone else.

Wow! I can't wait for part II !
Have you had any recollections about what the name of the piano was? Very intriguing.

Paul Author Profile Page replied to Ivory:

Oh boy. I'm guilty of setting things up too much! I don't generally do that, do I? It won't be about the dream.

I guess what stands out for me is how all the women in the dream are less than supportive to you. There's one who isn't there (she's off looking at other things), there's one who sabotages and competes with you and one who is argumentative with no clear facts on what happened. You've got an effeminate man who by social standards isn't acceptable, isn't strong or manly and who won't do the right thing.

The main symbol of womanhood is nurturing and caring but instead these symbols are combative or unavailable. Keep in mind though that everyone in the dream is most likely you in some form and not actually people in your real life. They may represent your feelings and not how you feel about the face put to those feelings, still the family dynamics in this dream are quite interesting.

btw: I've been reading you on Google reader. I'm still around.

You mentioned an old cluttered house. Do you remember any of the other items in the house? Was the piano in the back of the room or the first thing you saw? Was it easy to get to the piano? What was the lighting like in the room?

I think the songs played are significant as well. Those productions, though beautiful, have a sad side to them with moments of melancholy that touch many. I think in the dream there's a lot of emotion, a lot of high energy and attempt at self control on your part. What character in those productions is closest to you and how you responded in the dream?

Those are some of the other things I thought about while reading. I love reading dreams, even when the writer sees them as a ramble I still love to read them... hint, hint. :-)

Hi Austin, It's so nice to see you here. Yes, I have yours on Google Reader too which I just recently am using in earnest. Ah, yes, I do remember well now that you are a great interpreter of dreams! So, thank you for your input!! I kind of get they are all me, as I thought the house was a metaphor for the structure inside. But I really do have a lot of women in my life: wife, daughters, therapist. As far as your questions. Yes, the piano was way in back of the room. But somewhat prominent. It was a house/hotel. It was big but the rooms (and halls) seemed quite full with stuff. Like they needed to be weeded out. To get to the piano you had to go around the huge table where the "guy" and girl were doing their arts and crafts work. The piano was covered with sheet music (much like mine is). The lighting was bright. I never really liked either show or much the music, though I played a lot from both when I was younger on piano. But I do particularly like Les Miserables, which I can also not really remember. Maybe I'll email you my dreams then! Because I'm not sure everyone wants to read them!! Thanks so much for your "read" on it.

With all the art in that dream you had a lot of self expression going on. In the middle of chaos there was still time for self expression. Gotta love it.

Paul Author Profile Page replied to Austin:

Austin. I'm struck by your saying there was a lot of art. I went to read it again and didn't see that. Unless you mean art is music (which I do get). I was thinking of art more narrowly.
